{pretty, happy, funny, real}

~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~

Every Thursday, here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!

{happy}

Pippo got a DVD in the mail the other day! It's a recording of his daddy reading stories to him.

Have you ever heard of the program United through Reading?

I hadn't until after the Lt had already left, and my neighbor mentioned that they offered it at the base in Afghanistan where he was headed (she knew because her husband was already there, and had sent some stories home himself).

This was the first day. Fear not: he doesn't always camp out so close to the screen.

They have a video camera set up there, along with a selection books for different age groups, so the Lt could go in and read Pippo a handful of stories. Then they made a DVD out of it that he could send home!

We weren't sure how interested in it Pippo would be (he's not interested in tv in general), or whether he would get the concept of Dad on the screen, but he absolutely loves it. He "reads a book with Daddy" several times a day now, including as part of his bedtime routine.

He follows along in his book, laughs at Daddy's jokes, and blows him kisses when I tell him it's time to say goodnight. It's pretty adorable to watch. Happier still is the thought that they will be reading books together in person before too long!

One of Pippo's mealtime quirks:

 When he's finished, before he lets me wipe his hands and face with the washcloth, he steals it from me...

And insists on tidying up his tray.

Then he stacks his utensils and cup onto his plate (if there's any leftover food, he gathers it all up into one of the smaller compartments), and hands the whole thing to me.

(Toddlers are funny, aren't they? It's very important for some things to be arranged just so, and for others to be strewn about the floor with reckless abandon!)

We're getting close to the end of this deployment. It hasn't felt close enough yet for me to start the final cooking and cleaning and preparation that needs to happen before he gets home, but I've been getting antsy and looking for any excuse to keep myself busy!

Well, this week my farm box offered an add-on purchase of twenty pounds of peaches for canning, and in a fit of what I can only describe as late-deployment nesting, I signed up for it, despite already being in over my head in several other projects, having no experience in canning anything, and having no idea what 20 lbs of peaches looked like.

I think it's a manageable amount. They certainly look delicious! I've talked a friend into coming over and helping me figure out what exactly to do with them (that is, to come save me from myself).

Do you have any good recipes for peach preserves?
